Maria Callas only appeared in one film – Pier Paolo Pasolini’s 1969 Medea. It displayed her purely as an actress, but over recent decades her soprano voice has been heard on a number of other movie soundtracks, heightening emotion and generating drama. The LP Maria Callas: From Studio to Screen is a collection of operatic arias and scenes that have enlivened more than a dozen films. They include: "La mamma morta" (from Giordano’s Andrea Chénier), which made such an impression in Philadelphia; "Casta diva" (from Bellini’s Norma) as heard in The Bridges of Madison County and The Father; the Habanera from Bizet’s Carmen, which features in Bohemian Rhapsody, and "Vissi d’arte" from Puccini’s Tosca, used by the Coen brothers in their Oscar-winner Fargo.
